There's a hoary old chestnut that lives on the internet and propagates by sig quotes and forwards from lesser relatives. I saw it get quoted in a newsgroup one day:

"If a man is not a liberal when he's thirty, he has no heart.
If he is not a conservative when he's forty, he has no brain."

Only this time, a responder added:

"And if he is not King of the Forest when he's fifty, he has no courage."

I reach.

And apparently the person could not even steal the Churchill quote correctly...

But it was a perfect setup for the story. If I got the ages wrong, it was probably my fault. Nonetheless, nobody really gets it right, because when Churchill used the term "liberal," he meant something entirely different from when people use it now, anyway.

Indeed and the story is a good one.

And Churchill's conservatism, whilst having era-based racism, was at least of the kind that accepted the duties of the upper classes, as well as the privileges. Fat chance you'd see that happening these days. I mean, can you imagine a serious modern politician and a member of the cabinet, after ballsing up, enlisting and begging to be posted to the front line?

What a dinosaur! Today's upper-class is the hereditary money caste, and as Saint Ayn has shown, they not only don't have to do anything to prove that they're the best; the mere fact that they do nothing is the very best thing they could ever do for us.

Anybody who's smart and hip enough to slavishly obey her every word therefore knows that doing nothing is the highest calling, and the fact that it's also in their financial interest is just the sweet pink icing on the cake. Nothing could ever go wrong with that!

You'd make a pretty girl.

Not sure that Churchill did ever say it.

A little bit of googling suggests the original saying is older and it wasn't about liberals but republicans... linky (http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Winston_Churchill#Misattributed)

'The trouble with quotes on the internet is that it's difficult to discern whether or not they are genuine.' -Abraham Lincoln.

Excellent

[identity profile] the-rukh.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
And what's more, probably meant republican as opposed to monarchist.

This is why you shouldn't trust anyone over thirty.

[identity profile] pacotelic.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I had it on good advice that you shouldn't trust anyone UNDER thirty.

[identity profile] le-trombone.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, that advice is wrong. Trust me, I'm 53.

[identity profile] lilenth.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)

That's why I don't argue politics with older people. I know someone who is in their 70s I think and he is the worst, he's argue over anything including shit he doesn't understand so he has no idea why he's arguing for X or even what X is but that doesn't stop him.

To continue from your journal:

furthermore being a neo-nazi means hate speech is usually involved and that ISN'T protected, aka read the constitution since you have no fucking clue how the amendments actually work, but then you're generally clueless it seems.

No, that's Canada. Hate speech is a crime there.

Hate speech is NOT a crime in the USA, unless it is utilized in the commission of a hate crime acknowledged by such by federal authorities. It is perfectly within the realm of free speech in the USA for the American Nazi Party to have a march down Main Street and then deliver a speech in public about the superiority of the white man and how everyone else is inferior, so long as they have a permit to do so. I can point you to the relevant court cases if you like.

freedom of speech is not the right to say whatever you want without it being challenged, disagreed with or examined especially if it has underlying bigotry that you're in fucking denial about.

In the USA, freedom of speech is the right to say whatever you want without being challenged on your own private property. In public, you may be challenged at will. I can point you to the relevant court cases on that, too.

that it's unfair and mean of me to point out to people

Nowhere have I said that it's unfair or mean of you. At all.

If you can't fucking deal with disagreement or being asked to acknowledge that the shit you say can have consequences you don't want to own? You shouldn't be in one!

Except that T_P is not a social justice "safe space" and discussions on social justice in regards to language used by commenter has been deemed not to be on-topic or political in nature, and therefore the mods have come down on you for it.

In short, you're an ill informed ignorant childish person who is bawling at someone for expecting people to be fucking adults in a community that is supposed to be for adult discussion

I don't think you realize; I was banned from the comm a long time ago for flaming people at the top of my lungs. All I'm telling you is that the mods decide what's cool and what's isn't and if you want to stay there, you might want to put away the Flaming Sword of Social Justice Crusaderism.
