Not that I haven't laughed at that picture, especially with the "lather out with the boys" caption, but the premise that the joke rests on (black people--violent and easily angered!) is pretty shitty.
I thought it rested on the premise that white people are hopelessly stupid and will inevitably do something in the presence of black people that will incur their fully justified anger and violence.
I think the message here is rather obvious. This guy thinks that through accepting some elements of different culture he can be accepted among the people of that culture. But he's wrong.
This is a very old mistake, typical for idealistic people who can't tell their imaginary world from reality.
Actually, at this point in the series he's battling with himself being a racist because he chooses white bread over wheat ect. He's trying to become a non-racist by getting in touch with black culture. Since Slick is constantly doing moronic shit and taking things over the top it fits the character.
I dunno, in the case of calling someone a "Nigger" I think the violence is completely justified. To meet someone's declaration of such hatred and violence with equal hatred and violence seems to work out. I have a similar reaction when someone calls me a cunt. I hate that word and I've slapped the shit out of people for calling me one.
Division is not a solution. Neither is a policy of cultural assimilation. The only way is to quit subsidizing parasitism and let everybody into normal economy. Economy-based death of ghetto. It's already happening, but too slowly. Government just has to get out of the way.

These two takes are not in contradiction. The way of thinking I was talking about always implies a serious lack of understanding. Including mistaking stereotypes for real cultural elements.
I think it's quite hard to consider 'verbal assault' as equal to physical assault. Okay, I don't have much sympathy for someone getting beaten up for calling a black person a 'Nigger' but I don't really think it's proportional or equal of the person doing the beating either.
That's the core difference (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/21/opinion/21kristof.html) between liberals and conservatives. When conservative wants to help somebody, he does that with his own money through charity. When liberal thinks somebody needs help, he prefers to help with other people's money through government.
