I don't agree with everything my company's heads believe in. Most reporters are left wing Democrats, it's absolutely reasonable to see that they act as they believe.

remember when i posted that article about a year ago featuring former conservative republican strategists talking about how calling the media "left-wing" is just part of their strategy, like criticizing the referee instead of one's opponent so as to sow doubt among independents even when republicans are caught doing awful shit, and you said nothing?

good times

I don't, but it wouldn't surprise me if some see a strategic value in noting the truth.

he flat out admitted it was a lie and you lap it up

i suppose you think you're immune to bias

I'm certainly not immune to bias, but I'm also not a reporter.

I don't agree with everything my company's heads believe in either, but as a representative of my company and more specifically my department, if I do something against company policy or disobey my supervisor I'll be standing on a streetcorner with a cardboard sign reading WILL INSULT MORON LIBERTARIANS FOR FOOD so quickly my head will spin.

If my job is to report the news, and I report the news, and people watch it, it's all set.

[identity profile] xforge.livejournal.com 2009-10-06 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends who you're working for. If your organization tells you to say Obama's doing a frickin' kickass job and by tomorrow morning rainbows will be shooting out of everyone's asses, and you don't do that, you lose your job; similarly if your organization tells you to say Obama eats live babies and is forming a Gestapo to round up white people and ship them to internment camps, and you don't do THAT, you also lose your job. If your organization doesn't make you report what they want reported, you don't live on this planet.

Right. So clearly, the corporate-ness of the media doesn't influence the reporting, considering that they're quite left of the general population.

???? How do you get that? Marketing is marketing but you can't sell shit to people and expect them to think it's caviar. Media is just like any other 21st-century product: bland and lifeless, and pretty much exactly what most people want it to be. "The Media" isn't slanted left or right because "The Media" is only giving people what they want to hear. If it isn't what people want to hear, they're going to change the channel, and then that media outlet is going to go broke.

"The general population" elected Barack Obama, Jeffy, because they thought he was going to do something progressive. He hasn't, but that's immaterial. "The general population" isn't nearly as conservative as you think it is.

No, it's a center-right nation, just like we've been saying for ages.

[identity profile] xforge.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Center-right compared to Europe.

How pray tell do you imagine a "liberal media" surviving in a center-right nation? Don't you think all the center-right people would get sick of hearing liberal glurge schlepped out to them by the "liberal media?" When in reality the "liberal media" is one of the biggest moneymaking organizations in the US? Well, not counting newspapers mind you.

It's a center-right nation and a pretty much center-right media. And no possible way that could be any different.

I don't know if you noticed, but it's not surviving so well. The one right wing telelvision media source is the one that's been doing well in the ratings overall.
