That wasn't me trying to say that Obama is communist or whatever... it's just the flashbacks that I get. Back in USSR there were many jokes about mandated applauds during the speeches.
The applause was predictably plotted to the speech and broke along party lines based on what he was talking about. I'm pretty sure no "applause" light was needed as in TV studios of yore.
But that would be pretty funny if it were the case.

I get what you're saying here. I think it's a hallmark of politics in general, although I think that there'd be serious repercussions for not applauding enthusiastically in your aforementioned anecdote.
