My approach is that one does not know someone until one begins to talk to them. But striking up the conversation could be seen as hitting on someone, so, sometimes, you have to hit on someone to know if they want to be hit on.

Maybe you can talk to women without it being automatically about sex from the get-go. And, if you want it to be about sex from the get-go, don't bother.
