When I was growing up, 7th grade was the cutoff. Older teens and kids not in costume were chased off.

And yeah, they get big and scary.

When I was a kid it was socially unacceptable for older teens to go trick or treating without little kids. Going to a party in costume was a different matter. It might have been a regional thing though.
