Blackface will always have a negative historical connotation. Dressing as the character from Beverly Hills Cop is fine. Copy the clothes and whatever props might help convey the character. My white nephew was Movie! Nick Furry. He had a costume, eye patch and props. There was zero need to put him in blackface.
