Of Rand Paul's Big Filibuster

“The country needs more senators who care about liberty, but if Mr. Paul wants to be taken seriously, he needs to do more than pull political stunts that fire up impressionable libertarian kids in their college dorms. He needs to know what he’s talking about.”

-- Senator John McCain

A funny quote, I thought.

Sen. Rand Paul’s filibuster on March 6, 2013, expanded from the Senate floor to Twitter, where he, among other things, accused President Barack Obama of "advocating a drone strike program in America."

Our ruling

Rand Paul tweeted that "the president is advocating a drone strike program in America."

The attorney general and White House counterterrorism chief haven’t strictly ruled out the use of lethal force against U.S. citizens on American soil, but they said that it would take extraordinary circumstances. We — and all the experts we consulted — see no evidence that the administration is purposefully advancing the goal of a drone strike program in America. We rate Paul’s claim False.

it's just another example of the inability of that crowd to understand nuance.

How we you feel about domestic drone strike ability if Rubio wins the election in 2016?

[identity profile] dwer.livejournal.com 2013-03-08 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Presuming that Rubio cleaves to the same standard of significant national emergency on the level of 9/11 that Holder says Obama will?

I hate it either way. But Obama isn't seeking authority to kill anyone anywhere at any time. Let's argue about what's actually bad about the policy, not what's not true.

It's unfortunate that the president needs to be shamed into admitting this, however.

Holy crap, I agree with you. Drone strikes on Americans, man, we're discussing DRONE STRIKES ON AMERICANS. This country went insane on 9/11/01.

[identity profile] badlydrawnjeff.livejournal.com 2013-03-08 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
No, see, you're just missing the nuance.

[identity profile] ygrii-blop.livejournal.com 2013-03-09 10:54 am (UTC)(link)
I thought we didn't do nuance.

Same rules apply as to any military strike on U.S. soil. Would you have suggested that the military not shoot down the 4th 9/11 plane had it made its passengers not crashed it?

Because if you believe that yes, the Military should have shot down the plane before the terrorists crashed it into the White House then you support "drone strikes on American's, man!"

Oh, Professor, thank you so much for instructing me. All of us in this group are grateful for your wise guidance.

I didn't like his attitude.

Attitude has nothing to do with the factual statements of an argument. You're performing a Tone Argument if you use that rationale.

Who does?, ahem.

If Rubio were to win the Presidency, domestic drone strikes would be far down on my list of concerns.

[identity profile] badlydrawnjeff.livejournal.com 2013-03-08 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
The "nuance" you crave is in the administration responses which did not rule it out.

[identity profile] yes-justice.livejournal.com 2013-03-08 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a good line to be made clear.
