You own your own business, or so I've heard. Tell me, don't you screw your employees over so you can make more profit? If not, why not? Shouldn't your employees have made better decisions than to work for you?
I pay my employees -- almost all of whom are the equivalent of independent contractors -- exactly what we agree to, unless they really do amazing, in which case I pay them bonuses; so, no, I don't screw them over.
So how much do you pay them? If they're independent contractors in the USA, you're obviously not giving them any health or dental, much less any employment.
They're here in Italy, and they get paid commission. Our top saleswoman in 2012 earned 380,000 euros selling our olive oil. Our lowest was 22,000 euros, but he was selling as hobby more than a full time job.
They pay like 50% of their income in taxes. Why are they lucky the government covers that? If the government didn't cover it and refunded their taxes, they could pay it themselves and have plenty left over.
Nonsense. Healthcare is expensive, and just one accident or medical emergency would leave them devastated financially. They're lucky they don't have to worry about that, and I guarantee you that they wouldn't want to trade their national healthcare for no taxes After all, what they pay in taxes not only guarantees they never have to face bankruptcy due to a medical emergency, it also pays for good public transportation, good roads, their educational system, clean water, clean air, good housing, etc., etc., etc.....
You're so out of touch with the reality of most people's lives--here and in your adopted country--that it's becoming more and more obvious that you're not worth talking to. And not only that, you've become quite a bore.
Wow! That's great! Italy actually has protections for employees! No stupid "at-will" employment! Good for them! I'm glad the Italian government has made it possible to sue you if you do choose to fuck over your employees.
but, if you don't adhere to your employment contracts
Who says you don't? I would assume that you are smart enough, being a boss, to make sure to have the appropriate fine print: "The terms of this employment contract are subject to change at any time and in accordance with the wishes and requirements of the employer. Accepting employment with the employer is considered to be full agreement with this clause." Bingo, instant legal!
you get sued, which costs you, and
Not if you counter-sue for violation of the employment contract pursuant to the above clause and claim damages plus all legal fees.
no one will want to work for you
What choice will they have? The ability for them to get another job is contingent on an acceptable reference from you. No one wants a troublemaker. And just to make sure, put in a non-compete clause that prevents them from doing the same type of work they were doing with you, said non-compete covering a 500-mile radius. Insta-win! Just add lawyer!

Why not? You'd make more profit that way. More money in your pocket. Why choose to be the softie?
