Sadly, I don't see his replacement being any better. The selection process is designed specifically to keep progress from seeping into the Vatican, each Pope (if he lasts long enough) appoints his successor. This is why the Vatican is still stuck in the 5th Century while the rest of the world, and even many of the priests and nuns outside the Vatican, have moved into the twenty-first.

The only real achievement of Palpatine has been to stack the College of the Cardinals with conservative members. They will probably vote for the black guy, because most Catholics in the world aren't white and many of the white ones would like to see some progress, but the black guy will be even more vehemently homophobic and aids-is-punishment-for-your-pre/extramarital-sins than the last cunt pope.
