You're rather missing the point.

Being white does not make you automatically racist. However a lot of justifications people use to claim they are not racist bely a lack of understanding of the roots of racism and how they *might* be contributing to those roots.

So... ... ... if you say you aren't racist, then you are racist? Only racists talk about not being racist?

[identity profile] panteraonca.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand the difference--I'm just burned out on the issue right now and venting last-bloody-straw style.

Not only have I gotten told I am racist by nature for being white multiple times, in multiple venues, over the last week, but the last person to pull the "race card" in my presence did it while holding my coworker by the hair and trying to beat her with a phone receiver. That was yesterday. I posted about it in customerssuck.

Therefore, the whole "haw, haw, look at the whites trying to pretend they're not racist!" thing, even when it is not overgeneralizing and has points, brushes up against a very fucking sore nerve for me right now, and it's almost impossible for me to approach the issue even-handedly.

This is a tricky cartoon. Sure, its a profile of common arguments used, but if you take the inclusive of each of these then it casts far too wide a net. This is why I was initially opposed to its sentiments.

If you say you aren't a racist, you may still be a racist...or you may not be.

The point isn't to say that everyone is (despite the Avenue Q song), but some of the reasons some people use to back up the claim aren't always valid.

ooooh, icon love.

I love that film.

the idea that rev. wright is racist based on his saying "god damn america" rests on the implicit assumption that white people are the only "real" americans and non-whites are outsiders.

so i guess what i'm saying is that you are currently performing well within your parameters.

[identity profile] badlydrawnjeff.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, you dove right into that trap.

So, being a black supremacist isn't racism.
Calling the U.S. The United States of KKK America.

He even thinks AIDS was invented by the 'white man' to kill black people.

I can't find the clip again, but basically she wasn't getting enough attention from the interviewer and didn't like what the other interviewee was saying.

That's the amusing irony -- the person who drew this is a racist!

Please provide evidence that Wright is a "black supremacist."

No, it's pretty much what mcpreacher said.

10) has 2 statements. The first may be true, but it leading to the second is what's false.
9) is the guy who got into an argument online and got angry at the claim that white's are a privileged group and is projecting some kind of authority onto the others that are calling him out, so that he may play the underdog.
8) extremely common sentiment
7) Denouncing the KKK does not prove you're not a racist, acting like it does is the lie.
6) "Reverse racism's" impact on whites largely goes as far as hurt egos. Other groups suffer very real impacts. That's the point to be learned from 6.
5) Very much a lie in that this sentiment aids in keep institutional racist dynamics in place, which does matter.
4) People who for instance want draconian immigration laws are upset that they now have be careful to avoid "pitfalls", and a good number of them have to keep what they'd really like to say in the closet. If that's unfair, that's tough.
3) Always a lie, he did not build his fortune with his own two hands out of a vacuum. Other factors, many outside his control, played a role. If he's white, historically and still today more of those factors worked FOR him than for other ethnicities.
1) Easy to claim, hard to know. The second, small part is where the problem lies.
