"It is best known, at least to me, as the site of the martyrdom of Thomas Becket and the millions of pilgrimages that followed (hence, The Canterbury Tales). A rather terrifying sculpture, combining the motifs of the cross and the sword, now hangs on the wall in the north-west transept where four knights stabbed Becket as he knelt in prayer."
